Meet our CEO

Matthew Bowler, CEO of AspirePlus Educational Trust

Matthew was born, raised and educated in Tameside. He graduated from Manchester University with a BA (Hons) in History in 1993. With 24 years of experience in secondary education, Matthew has previously worked in a variety of different contexts and a range of leadership, teaching, pastoral and curriculum roles. These experiences came in a variety of different contexts across Greater Manchester: Wright Robinson High School, Manchester; Kingsway High School, Stockport and Wellacre Academy, Trafford.

In 2006 Matthew successfully completed the National Professional Qualification in Headship and in 2010, Matthew was appointed Headteacher of Longdendale High School. Since that time Longdendale has undergone dynamic improvement and in the most recent Ofsted inspection the school was graded as ‘good’ with the effectiveness of leadership and management judged ‘outstanding’.

In January 2016, Matthew took on the additional role of Executive Headteacher of Astley Sports College and became CEO of the A+ Trust.  As CEO of the A+ Trust, a collaboration of seven Tameside secondary schools and a sixth form college, Matthew further developed an operating model of school improvement to support the most vulnerable member school. The impact of this work supported Matthew’s efforts in successfully achieving approval for the Trust’s application to form a multi-academy trust, which has been an essential and positive step for the A+ Trust to take.

Matthew has recently completed the Executive Educators training programme for CEOs from an educational background. From September 2017, Matthew will concentrate full-time on leading the AspirePlus Educational Trust’s vision and mission; supporting the vision for school improvement at both member schools and the growth of the Trust as appropriate.
